November 15, 2006 – Separated by 50 years but united by a love of golf, the legendary Lu Liang Huan and talented teenager Jimmy Ko had plenty to talk about when they were paired in the UBS Hong Kong Open Pro Am on Wednesday.
Taiwan’s famous “Mr Lu”, two-time winner of the Hong Kong Open and runner-up in the 1971 British Open, passed on some tips to 18-year-old Ko, one of Hong Kong’s best young players.
“If he keeps practising, then he is going to be some player,” Lu, 70, said of his partner after their round at the Hong Kong Golf Club in Fanling.
Ko, who is looking forward to subbing shoulders with some of the modern greats when he takes part in Thursday’s first round of the UBS Hong Kong Open, relished the chance to play with a legend.
“It was an awesome experience,” he said. “Mr Lu gave me plenty of good advice. He’s still in great shape and he played very well. I really enjoyed playing with him.”
