November 19, 2006 – Liang Wenchong produced a truly golden moment in the final round of the UBS Hong Kong Open on Sunday with a stunning hole-in-one.
The Chinese star delighted the galleries when he aced the 140-yard par-three 12th hole at the Hong Kong Golf Club in Fanling.
“I hit a very good nine-iron and it landed on the green and bounced into the hole, as simple as that,” he said.
Liang’s shot earned him a 1 kg solid gold bar worth approximately US$20,000 (HK$155,482) from tournament title sponsor UBS.
He received his prize from Kathryn Shih, Chief Executive of UBS Hong Kong Branch, in front of the main scoreboard in the Event Village at Fanling.
Liang shot a three-under-par 67 to finish the tournament on six-under 274.
It is the second year running a player has won a gold bar for acing the 12th hole at the UBS Hong Kong Open. Robert Jan Derksen of Holland achieved the feat during the third round in 2005.
